On January 29, 1868, the Washington
Territorial Legislature created Spokane County from the
northeastern part of Walla Walla County. In 1864 Spokane was
reorganized as part of
Stevens County. In 1879 Spokane County
was disorganized, reorganized from Stevens County, and recreated
as Spokane County.
Spokane County is the center of the
"Inland Empire". It includes parts of the Spokane Valley plains,
Okanogan, Selkirk Highlands, and Palouse Hills of Eastern
Washington.
Spokane, an Indian word meaning "Children of
the Sun" or "Sun People", was derived from the chief of the
Middle Spokane Indians, Illim Spokanee.
The city of
Spokane {spo-kan} is the County Seat. The city was originally
called "Spokane Falls", but in 1891 a vote of the people changed
it to "Spokane".
Washington became a state, November 11,
1889. |
